Born James William on the 18th January 1928 in Shrewsbury, he was bought up with his brothers Ed. Dick, John and sister Nora.
On leaving School He started work for the Great Western Railway until He joined the general service corps in November 1945, and subsequently transferred to the Royal Signals as a lineman. During his service he was posted to Cyprus, Egypt and Palestine He was awarded the General service medal with the clasp, Palestine. He never spoke about the operational side of his life in the med, but outside of that, he would tell us tales at the dinner table, that had us all roaring with laughter. He was a great story teller with a natural gift of timing to get the best laugh.
His last posting was the Uk, where he met Our Mum Refna. They married on the 29th December 1951. Dad left the Army in march 1953. We three Myself, Clive and David, followed on. and just after David was born we moved to Broughton Road in Harlescott. Dad worked as an electrician in the silhouette factory and then on to Plessey as a telephone exchange installer.
On being made redundant, Dad sort of semi retired to work for Manders delivering paint part time. At the same time the family home was moved to Monkmoor. Sadly, Mum passed away in September 1993. Dad stayed on at Clive road until Ill health forced a Move to Holy Cross. It was here that Dad died on the 25th July.
Family always came first with dad, particularly if any of was ill or in hospital. When mum was ill for a long period, he would often spend all day at the hospital, giving support and care way beyond the call of duty
Throughout his life Dad had a very competitive nature, (to the point that he would stay up till 3 in the morning till he beat you) His passions being Motor bikes and Golf (which I inherited),. He enjoyed numerous pastimes including table tennis, darts, crib and dominoes all of which earned him a well stocked trophy cabinet.
This is just a small snapshot of a man who will be sorely missed by the family and all who basked in his glow.
Good bye old mate, and by the way, Uncle Ed says you still owe him 5 p From Dominoes last week.
